Giving base to the rumors from earlier weeks, Sony confirmed its plans of quitting the PC business by March 2014. The company has announced to sell of its VAIO computer division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) wherein around 250 – 300 employees from the Sony PC division are to be hired by the JIP, who will initially manufacture and sell VAIO branded PCs in Japan only.
Sony decided to quit planning, design and development of PC products due to the “drastic changes in the global PC industry” and will now be focusing on its gaming, camera and mobile divisions. Manufacturing and sales will stop by spring 2014.
The brand VAIO was introduced in 1996 and has expanded over the years with high-end design and good performance but in a recent market research, its shipment has dropped by 11.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 as compared to the fourth quarter of 2012 and is no longer topping the list.
I am a VAIO owner and I feel nostalgic writing about this. It was my second PC but the experience is just wow. Are you a VAIO owner too? Share your reactions and story with us, in the comments section below.
